Insurance claim fraud can delay or worsen claimants' recovery

The article describes a scenario where an injured claimant is allegedly pushed toward unnecessary surgery, after which they can be physically worse off months later.

Risk & Insurance highlights the real-world harm behind insurance claim fraud, arguing that the issue is not only about inflated bills but also about people who may suffer after being targeted.

In one example discussed, an injured person seeks medical treatment after an accident, but a provider allegedly recommends unnecessary surgery to increase the value of the claim, leaving the claimant worse off months later, both physically and financially, according to the piece.

The article says carriers can act as a key line of defense by helping stop a fraudulent provider from harming the claimant they are targeting.

It is also noted that Travelers Investigative Services, led by Pranay Mittal, has a specialized team of more than 300 investigators and analyzes more than 35,000 suspicious claims annually.
