Tiger Global may book $5bn paper gain on early OpenAI stake

Bloomberg reported Tiger Global’s hedge fund gained 9.4% in the first nine months of 2026, aided by the paper value increase on its OpenAI position.

Tiger Global Management could see an estimated $5bn in unrealised paper gains from its early investment in OpenAI, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Bloomberg said the AI company is pursuing a new funding round that could value it at $1.4tn, and that Tiger Global initially committed $150m to OpenAI in 2021 when the company was valued at $15.7bn.

The report also said Tiger Global has increased its holdings several times since 2021, and that the gains depend on a future exit, such as an eventual IPO.

Bloomberg further reported that OpenAI helped support performance across Tiger Global’s funds this year, with its hedge fund up 9.4% and its public-private crossover fund returning 19.3% in the first nine months of 2026.
