African insurers weigh AI opportunities as economies grow
The African Insurance Organisation cited 2025 real GDP growth averaging 4.4%, and said access to reliable data is key to deploying AI.
The African Insurance Organisation, a pan-African industry group, published its Annual Report 2026 prepared by consulting firm Faber Consulting, pointing to continued economic expansion across Africa alongside uneven insurance market development by country.
According to the report, African economies posted estimated average real GDP growth of 4.4% in 2025, above the global average of 3.4%, with 22 African economies recording growth above 5%. The report also said Africa accounted for 12 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies during the year.
The AIO linked part of the improved outlook to monetary easing, noting average inflation fell from 21.8% in January 2025 to 13.7% by December. The report also identified access to reliable, consistent data as a key factor for how effectively insurers can implement AI technologies, while adding that the 2026 outlook has been affected by the war in the Middle East.
