AI could reshape who drives copper demand and price
The International Energy Agency projects global data center electricity use to rise from about 415 TWh in 2024 to around 945 TWh by 2030, and industry estimates put copper needs at roughly 30 tonnes per megawatt of installed data center capacity.
Mining.com argues that AI could change copper pricing not just by increasing overall demand, but by bringing in a new class of buyer with a high willingness to pay.
The outlet notes that although AI is digital, it depends on a physical buildout including data centers and the related power infrastructure needed to run them.
Mining.com cites the International Energy Agency projection that global data center electricity consumption will climb from about 415 TWh in 2024 to around 945 TWh by 2030.
It also points to industry estimates that data centers may require roughly 30 tonnes of copper per megawatt of installed capacity, before considering additional copper needs across wider electricity networks.
