Bitcoin Magazine interview warns centralized AI could threaten freedoms
HRF Chief Strategy Officer Alex Gladstein argues the biggest AI risk is centralized control rather than human extinction, and points to local, open-source AI as a way to keep technology in users' hands.
Bitcoin Magazine featured an interview with Human Rights Foundation Chief Strategy Officer Alex Gladstein, who said the main AI risk is centralized control in the hands of dictators, governments, and a few large corporations rather than “human extinction.”
Gladstein disputed broad claims that “AI will kill us all” as largely propaganda, and said locally run, open-source AI on personal devices could be important for protecting freedom.
In the discussion, Gladstein highlighted concepts for “Freedom Stack” style approaches, including encrypted inference, open weights, and local AI that operates on a laptop and phone.
The interview also covered how HRF trains human rights activists to use AI, tying the technology focus to its human rights mission.
