Hong Kong renews free-to-air TV licences for three broadcasters until 2039

The renewals extend 12-year licences through 2039 for HK Television Entertainment and TVB, and through 2040 for i-Cable Hoy.

Hong Kong authorities have renewed free-to-air television licences for the city’s three broadcasters, with conditions aimed at increasing local production of English-language national education programmes, according to SCMP Economy.

The Executive Council, Hong Kong’s top decision-making body, approved the renewal on Tuesday, extending 12-year licences for HK Television Entertainment and TVB through 2039, and for i-Cable Hoy through 2040.

A government spokesman said the approvals, along with relaxation measures and enhancement requirements, are designed to foster the sustainable development of the local broadcasting industry and provide more diversified and quality programming.
