Cyberattack forces French supermarket fridges to heat up to 50C

The hack disrupted refrigeration controls at more than 100 Coopérative U stores and about 180 Intermarché outlets, spoiling fresh and frozen food worth millions of euros, according to the affected retailers.

Hundreds of French supermarkets were hit by a cyberattack that overheated their fridges and freezers overnight, spoiling fresh and frozen food estimated to be worth millions of euros, BBC Business reported.

Hackers gained control of software used to regulate refrigeration temperatures, forcing some units to warm to 50C (120F) overnight, with Coopérative U describing the incident as “extremely serious and unprecedented,” according to BBC Business.

BBC Business said more than 100 of Coopérative U supermarkets were targeted, and about 180 Intermarché stores and its Netto brand were affected. The outlet also reported that other retailers, including Carrefour, Monoprix and E.Leclerc, were hit, and that affected systems relied on software provided by Danish engineering firm Danfoss.

The Guardian reported that fires and food losses were reported in connection with the overnight heating of many fridges across the country. The Guardian added that the Paris prosecutor’s office said the attack was a large-scale incident.
