Dow ends higher even as Micron and Nasdaq 100 slide

The DJIA closed just above 51,800, its highest close in more than two weeks, with Salesforce contributing about an eighth of the day’s gain.

Micron fell about 4% on Monday and weighed on the Nasdaq 100, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished higher even though it holds no memory-chip maker. The S&P 500, which includes Micron and all 30 Dow members, ended slightly lower.

The Dow closed just above 51,800, its highest close in more than two weeks. Coverage attributed much of the gain to Salesforce, which supplied about an eighth of the day’s rise.

Because the Dow is price-weighted, a $1 move in any member translates to about six index points, regardless of the company’s size. Micron’s decline would have cost the Dow more than 200 points if it were part of the index, while Nvidia, Amazon, and Cisco contributed about 50 points of the day’s drag.

More than 20 of the 30 Dow members rose. Microsoft, Apple, American Express, and Visa added roughly 90 points combined, and Salesforce added about 20 points.
