EU to cap Chinese plug-in hybrid imports at 350,000 vehicles a year
The EU said vehicles above the quota will be blocked at European customs docks, with the measure set to start in December.
The European Commission confirmed the EU will limit imports of Chinese plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to 350,000 cars per year, using World Trade Organization safeguard rules to implement the quota quickly.
The commission said any Chinese plug-in hybrid electric vehicles imported above the new quota level will be blocked in customs at docks in Europe.
It expects the quota, which is due to come into force in December, to halve China’s market share, which currently stands at 6% based on a landmark four-year agreement signed in Beijing last week.
The article also noted that imports have risen sharply over the past two years, and that about 800,000 battery and plug-in hybrids are likely to be sold this year.
