IMF lifts UK 2026 growth forecast to 1.3%, flags outlook risk

The IMF expects growth to cool after 2026 and warns the global economy could soon test the limits of resilience.

The International Monetary Fund raised its forecast for UK economic growth in 2026 to 1.3%, while indicating growth is likely to edge down in 2027, according to The Guardian.

In remarks delivered at the IMF’s World Economic Outlook launch at the annual meetings in Bangkok, the IMF’s economic counsellor Silvana Tenreyro said the UK stands out among G7 countries for having a plan to narrow its deficit, and she pointed to an ongoing consolidation process.

Tenreyro, who previously served on the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, urged UK policy makers to continue what she described as repairing public finances, saying the message for the UK was to “stay the course.”

The Guardian also reported that the IMF warned the global economy could soon test the limits of resilience.
