Captives shift toward capital platforms as insurers tighten capacity

Insurance broker Aon says corporate captives are evolving from pure risk retention vehicles into platforms designed to access strategic capital, a shift that is beginning to attract third party funding.

According to Aon, captive owners are increasingly partnering with external investors to unlock additional capacity that can support business growth initiatives and long term resilience, while captives are also being used to inform strategic decisions on capital deployment.

Aon also pointed to a growing gap between risk and available insurance capacity, noting that changing risks and rising losses from natural catastrophes, cyber and litigation are pressuring organizations and insurers, which at times is reducing line sizes and making capacity more selective.
