India may need larger coal capacity through 2035 to meet demand

India last year planned 97 gigawatts of new coal-fired capacity through 2035, but a senior official said that target may need revising upward.

OilPrice reports that India may need to revise up planned coal-fired power capacity installations through 2035 as electricity demand rises and requires more grid stability and flexibility.

The outlet says that last year India set a goal to add a total of 97 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity through 2035, targeting 307 gigawatts of installed coal capacity.

According to OilPrice, the senior Indian official made the point in remarks on Tuesday, citing the need to keep the grid stable while accommodating higher demand.
