Microsoft president says milk and washing machines are more regulated than AI

Brad Smith urged global AI safety rules, including mandatory breach notification to affected parties and outside evaluators signing off before release.

Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, said AI faces less regulation than everyday consumer products like milk and washing machines, arguing that stronger global safety rules are needed.

In comments on the BBC Business podcast Big Boss Interview, Smith called for legal obligations to notify a system’s victim if an AI system is breached by a rogue AI agent, and for decisions on when outside evaluators should sign off on an AI product before it is released.

Smith said his position puts him at odds with President Donald Trump, who has argued the sector should regulate itself so US firms are not disadvantaged versus Chinese rivals.

Smith also described AI as both a tool and a weapon, saying demands for AI rules have intensified amid broader warnings about the technology’s risks.
