Solana plans to retire durable nonces and use offline-signing programs

The Solana Foundation said the switch would include a roughly six-month migration window, contingent on a replacement program being ready, audited, and launched.

CryptoSlate reports that Solana is moving to retire durable nonces, a mechanism that allowed transactions to be signed offline and broadcast later, as part of an October deprecation plan.

Under the proposal, offline-signing would be preserved through onchain signer programs that verify an offline signature and execute the approved instructions, using a program-derived address to control the affected accounts.

The Foundation’s plan would also change custody and execution, adding a program between cold-key approval and transaction execution so that a separate online operator submits the approved actions and pays the network fee, while affected operators would need to reassess account authority, application access, and custody controls.

CryptoSlate adds that durable nonces would remain usable, and the Foundation has not set a removal date or finalized a choice between Anza’s Programmatic Signer and Blueshift’s Vector, with a roughly six-month migration window conditional on a suitable replacement being ready and audited.
