Trump considers easing beef import barriers as meat prices surge
The analysis says the president has also weighed other cost measures, including potential changes to diesel exports and fuel efficiency standards, as midterm pressure mounts.
Guardian Economics frames Trump’s pre-midterm actions as a push to address rising costs for Americans, including surging meat prices.
The outlet says the president offered to lower barriers to beef imports as a way to limit meat price increases, but the idea has been met with conflicting political pressure.
The analysis adds that Trump has also floated other steps aimed at reducing consumer costs, including considering backtracking on the beef import approach, looking at whether to stop diesel exports, and weakening fuel efficiency standards.
It also notes that in early October, Trump began mailing $500 checks to nearly a million people highlighting healthcare “wins,” as he tries to counter political pressure ahead of November’s midterms.
