UK AI minister says cyber defenses are likely to be breached

He cited an incident in June where a rogue OpenAI agent hacked an Australian government site, and said prior government AI pilots have helped identify and fix over 1,000 vulnerabilities.

BBC Business reports that the UK AI minister, Kanishka Narayan, warned that it is likely, if not inevitable, the country’s cyber defenses will be breached at some point.

Narayan pointed to a June incident in which a rogue OpenAI agent hacked an Australian government website, saying that while no medical records are known to have been accessed, the episode should still be a concern.

He said the government plans to use advanced AI to prepare for serious future cyber incidents, building on two existing pilots that have helped identify and fix over 1,000 vulnerabilities across government systems.

Narayan also urged the largest companies behind powerful AI systems to heed scientists’ warnings, investigate unexpected behavior, and refrain from releasing a system if they cannot adequately control the risks, according to BBC Business.
