Eldorado Gold’s Skouries mine in Greece gets EU strategic status
The European Commission designated the project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, placing it among 46 selected projects for faster permitting and improved access to financing.
The European Commission has granted strategic status to Eldorado Gold’s Skouries copper-gold mine in Greece, aiming to speed permitting and improve access to financing as the project ramps up production, Mining.com reports.
The designation, announced by the company on Oct. 9, places Skouries among 46 projects selected under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) to strengthen the bloc’s domestic supply chain for critical metals.
Eldorado said the recognition supports secure and responsible supply of critical raw materials needed for economic growth, industrial competitiveness, and the energy transition, with copper included in the CRMA list because it is used for Europe’s electrification and manufacturing needs.
Eldorado president and CEO Christian Milau said the strategic status highlights the project’s role in improving Europe’s long-term supply chain resilience as the EU seeks to reduce reliance on China for critical metals.
