PERILS cuts Windstorm Goretti loss estimate to €468m

PERILS said the updated footprint now includes motor loss data at the CRESTA-zone level for European windstorm events, with Belgium’s motor losses at 8% of the total.

PERILS, a Zurich-based catastrophe insurance data provider, lowered its third insured market loss estimate for Windstorm Goretti, also known as Elli, to €468 million. The storm hit southwest England, northern France, and Belgium on January 8 and 9, 2026.

The latest estimate covers losses across property and motor lines based on data collected from affected insurers, and it is lower than PERILS’s second estimate of €479 million released in April 2026. It is broadly unchanged from the initial estimate of €467 million published six weeks after the event ended.

PERILS said Cornwall in southwest England and the French departments of Manche, Calvados, and Seine-Maritime were the most affected areas, while Belgium saw comparatively limited impacts. In the new breakdown, motor losses account for 8% of total losses in Belgium, compared with 5% in France and 1% in the UK.

For the first time, the industry loss footprint for a European windstorm includes motor losses at the CRESTA-zone level. PERILS also said a fourth update will be provided on January 9, 2027, twelve months after the event end date.
