Concerns raised over security of Trump’s Qatar-donated Air Force One
The New York Times reported the Boeing 747-8 plane lacked anti-missile countermeasures that were on the older jet, as US and Iran tensions resurfaced.
Donald Trump faces questions about the security of a new Air Force One plane, a retrofitted Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar, after he switched aircraft during travel related to a NATO summit and later moved the newer jet ahead to a British airbase, according to SCMP Economy, citing reporting by the New York Times and other US outlets. The New York Times reported that the newer aircraft did not have the same security countermeasures as the older plane, including anti-missile defenses. US media also reported that the Secret Service advised the aircraft change, with further scrutiny fueled by the apparent escalation of hostilities involving the United States and Iran, which borders Turkey.
SCMP Economy also noted that journalists departing the older plane out of Ankara were told to keep their window blinds down, a precaution typically associated with war zones. Trump denied any security concerns, but after switching back to the new plane for the flight from the UK to Washington, he referenced alleged Iranian assassination attempts, the outlet reported.
