Heatwave cuts EU and UK 2026 grain output forecasts

COCERAL projects EU and UK total grain production for 2026 at 286.6 million tonnes, down 23.4 million tonnes year over year.

Total grain production in the European Union and the United Kingdom for 2026 is expected to fall by 23.4 million tonnes to 286.6 million tonnes after a recent heatwave, according to an extraordinary crop forecast published by COCERAL, as covered by World Grain.

The update trims wheat output expectations, excluding durum, to 140.8 million tonnes from the prior forecast of 143.7 million tonnes, and notes kernel filling impacts in central and southern France, southern Germany, and Austria, Poland, and Hungary.

Corn production was revised down to 52.7 million tonnes from 57.2 million tonnes, with the forecast describing early weather effects on corn pollination in southern France and Hungary.

For France specifically, French corn production is expected to drop to 9.4 million tonnes from 13.8 million last year, described by COCERAL as the lowest level in more than 20 years, with both disappointing expected yields and a sharp reduction in plantings cited as drivers.
