Volkswagen China deliveries fall 26.1% in first half of 2026

Volkswagen delivered 971,000 vehicles in China from January to June, the lowest level since the first half of 2010, as the total China market fell about 20% year on year.

Volkswagen Group said its vehicle deliveries in China plunged during the first half of 2026, slipping 26.1% year on year to 971,000 units, the lowest level in 16 years. The company said the volume in mainland China also marked the weakest first-half period since it sold 950,300 vehicles in 2010, according to SCMP Economy.

Volkswagen attributed the decline to a challenging market environment in China, where it said it could not offset a significant total market decline of around 20%. The company pointed to ongoing shifts in demand as local EV brands continued to draw buyers away from petrol cars, it said in a statement.

The drop in China was not fully compensated by deliveries elsewhere, with Volkswagen reporting global deliveries fell 6% from a year earlier to 4.13 million units. Volkswagen said an 8% increase in South America and a 3% rise in western Europe only partially offset the contraction in China, SCMP Economy reported.
