China says it will weigh responses to Philippines South China Sea tactics
The interview describes a Philippine strategy that posts viral footage of China intercepting vessels, aiming to boost Congress funding for coastguard resources.
HousingWire reports on an interview with Wu Shicun, founding president of China’s National Institute for South China Sea Studies, who discussed possible ways Beijing could respond to rival claimants in the South China Sea dispute.
Wu said Manila’s “assertive transparency” initiative follows a distinct playbook, including documenting and publicizing what it characterizes as Chinese grey-zone tactics, such as blockades and the use of water cannons, while the Philippines since 2023 has intruded around Renai Jiao, according to the interview.
In the account, confrontations are captured and distributed as short viral videos designed to shape international perceptions of who is the aggressor, with the stated goal of influencing global views about the dispute.
Wu also linked the strategy to Philippine domestic political considerations, saying it is aimed at securing more budget and equipment support from the Philippine Congress for its coastguard.
