Chinese court orders three men to compensate family after death
The ruling followed an all-night drinking and gaming session in Urumqi, with compensation totaling over 100,000 yuan (about US$15,000).
A Chinese court has ordered three men in Urumqi, in the northwest, to compensate a friend’s family after the man died following an all-night drinking and gaming session, according to SCMP Economy.
The ruling concerned an incident that began in October 2025, when the man surnamed Gao played mahjong with two friends and the mahjong parlour owner from about 9:00 pm until 3:00 am the next day while drinking throughout the games.
After the mahjong session, another friend joined and drank with the group until about 6:00 am. The men then moved on to play billiards for about half an hour, before the group left.
SCMP Economy reports that Gao later took a taxi, while his three friends stayed with him, and the court based its decision on public surveillance footage showing two friends walking and supporting Gao, while Deng paid the taxi fare. The court ordered the three defendants to pay the family a combined amount of over 100,000 yuan, about US$15,000.
