Hongkongers boost cat spending to record HK$2,062 monthly

A survey of about 2,500 cat owners found 85% said their overall cat care expenses rose over the past year, with ageing cats a key driver of higher spending.

Hong Kong cat owners are spending more on their pets, with a survey showing average monthly spending reached a record HK$2,062, or about US$263, this year. SCMP Economy reports the figure represents a 2.8% year-on-year increase and is being linked to a growing “cat silver economy.”

The Exhibition Group, organizer of the upcoming Hong Kong Cat Expo 2026, said the results come from an online survey of about 2,500 cat owners conducted last month. It found 85% of respondents indicated their overall cat care expenses increased over the past year.

SCMP Economy reports ageing felines are the second-ranked factor behind higher spending, after economic factors, followed by illness or accident-related medical care. The share of cats aged four to seven rose from 20.8% of the feline population in 2024 to 28.2% this year, while cats have an average lifespan of 15 years.

The Exhibition Group also said the growing share of middle-aged cats is expected to drive more demand for medical care, prescription food, and precision healthcare products. Its general manager, Shirley Chu Shuet-ling, said that within the next three to five years this group will become seniors, shifting owners’ motivations from basic feeding to longer-term care and quality of life.
