Staffing Partners builds risk program to cut workers comp litigation costs

Risk & Insurance highlights that more than 25% of Southern California workers compensation claims end up litigated, pushing Staffing Partners to act early with investigations and weekly claims strategy meetings.

Staffing Partners has moved to address workers compensation risk in Southern California, where more than 25% of claims are reported as litigated, often with injured workers represented by applicant attorneys before an employer even hears about an injury, Risk & Insurance reports.

The staffing company says the typical outcome in that environment can include inflated claim costs, longer claim duration, and unnecessary litigation that erodes profitability, even as it scaled to nearly $1 billion in revenue in less than ten years.

Stephen Grimaud, vice president and CRO at Staffing Partners, describes the effort as shifting from conventional, reactive claim handling to proactive risk management. When a questionable claim is reported, Staffing Partners immediately launches an investigation through a dedicated investigative partner, aiming to give actionable information to the adjuster as early as possible.

The approach also includes a highly engaged claims management structure, with weekly meetings between Grimaud and a CorVel claims team to review questionable claims and shape strategy. In addition, the company holds an annual defense counsel summit that focuses on systemic challenges and asks how to prevent issues, minimize their impact if they occur, and continuously improve the program.
