Tokyo ward tests AI facial recognition cameras to locate missing people
Arakawa Ward installed 33 AI-equipped cameras near JR Nippori Station to run photo based, AI assisted searches for missing children and people with dementia.
Arakawa Ward in Tokyo has installed outdoor security cameras with facial recognition capabilities to speed up searches for missing children and elderly residents, as Kyodo reported via SCMP Economy.
The ward began the trial in April, placing 33 AI equipped cameras on pylons along a main street and other locations near JR Nippori Station, an area used by commuters, students, and foreign residents.
If a child or an elderly person with dementia goes missing, families can request an AI assisted search by providing a photograph.
The system scans recorded footage for people who closely match the provided image, while the trial also faces privacy concerns in Japan.
