China official says Hong Kong national security laws need updates
A former mainland official said the legal framework should be refined over time as loopholes are found.
Hong Kong’s national security laws should be continually updated to address emerging risks and close loopholes, a former senior mainland Chinese official told a seminar, according to SCMP Economy.
Wang Zhenmin, a former bureau chief of the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Office, said building a national security legal system is a long process that cannot be completed through a single law, adding that authorities should introduce legislation promptly when gaps are discovered.
The comments were made at a seminar organized by the semi-official Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies think tank, where mainland legal experts discussed ongoing security developments.
The event, titled “Safeguard high-quality development through high-level security,” drew more than 300 attendees, including lawmakers, district councillors, and representatives from the legal sector and wider community.
