Hong Kong farmers report six-figure losses after heavy summer rain

An estimated HK$300,000 loss at a large sunflower farm followed Sunday flooding that lasted about seven hours during amber rainstorm conditions.

Local farmers in Hong Kong have reported six-figure losses since May after repeated extreme downpours disrupted crop production, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet said a farm in northern Hong Kong was flooded for about seven hours during heavy rain on Sunday, following persistent flooding or rain through the summer season.

SCMP Economy cited Hong Kong Drainage Services Department data showing about 50mm of rainfall across much of the city between 6am and 1pm under an amber rainstorm signal, with North, Yuen Long, Tai Po and Sai Kung each recording close to 100mm.

One example given by the outlet involved a 300,000 sq ft sunflower farm that runs three batches of 30,000 plants each monthly from May to July, and it reported a HK$300,000 loss attributed to frequent downpours during the period.
