China’s high-altitude C919 variant completes maiden test flight in Shanghai

The aircraft will undergo airworthiness certification and environmental trials at multiple high-plateau airports before entering commercial service, with a focus on demand in western China.

China’s first high-altitude variant of the C919 narrowbody jet has completed its maiden test flight at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, a milestone highlighted by People’s Daily, according to SCMP Economy.

The specialised aircraft is derived from the standard C919 platform and is designed for operations in high-altitude regions, including a shortened fuselage and enhanced onboard systems, SCMP Economy reported.

SCMP Economy also said the jet will go through comprehensive airworthiness certification and environmental adaptability trials across various high-plateau airports before it is cleared for commercial service.

The launch of the derivative is intended to round out the C919 family for different elevations, and SCMP Economy cited reporting that the aircraft is expected to help address rising travel demand in western China.
