White House crypto adviser Patrick Witt to start military leave as Clarity Act nears
His months-long leave follows efforts to advance the Clarity Act before the Senate’s August recess and could affect negotiations on digital-asset oversight split between the SEC and CFTC.
Patrick Witt, the White House’s top crypto adviser, is set to begin a months-long leave of absence later this month to report for training with the Georgia Army National Guard, according to Bitcoin Magazine, citing Crypto in America.
The outlet said Witt, 37, is expected to wrap up his White House role next Friday before reporting July 27 to the Guard’s Judge Advocate General program, a track that qualifies him to serve as a military attorney for matters including military justice and operational and administrative law.
Witt’s departure comes as the Senate pushes to advance the Clarity Act, the crypto industry’s market structure bill that would divide digital-asset oversight between the SEC and the CFTC. The measure cleared the House in July 2025 by a 294 to 134 vote and moved from the Senate Banking Committee in May by a 15 to 9 margin.
Senate leaders are aiming to open floor debate before Congress breaks on August 7, a timeline viewed by policy observers as the last chance for passage this Congress, with Witt previously acting as the administration’s chief negotiator and leading talks on contested provisions including stablecoin yield, ethics language, and law enforcement concerns.
