Study finds AI tool use can improve short term learning but hurt later

An American-British study of 1,222 people reported that AI helped performance initially on tasks, but reduced results and motivation when the tools were unavailable.

Generative AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude can write emails and code, translate text, plan trips and produce other assistance, and an American-British study is examining whether that convenience changes how people learn, with early effects showing both gains and losses over time, according to SCMP Economy.

The study involved 1,222 participants and is still under peer review, it found that using AI tools to solve arithmetic or reading comprehension exercises improved performance in the short term.

However, the same research reported that over the long run, participants’ results diminished and their willingness to keep trying fell when AI tools were not available.

The outlet said the effects are already being discussed in contexts including schools and universities, workplaces, and even personal decision making.
