US launches fresh strikes to curb Iran threats in the Strait of Hormuz
US Central Command said an aircraft disabled a Curacao-flagged empty oil tanker attempting to break Iran’s port blockade.
The United States launched a new wave of strikes against Iran on Wednesday, aiming to limit Iran’s ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a story from SCMP Economy citing US Central Command.
The US military said the strikes began at 1900 GMT and targeted Iranian military capabilities used to threaten vessels transiting the key waterway, while President Donald Trump warned he could widen attacks unless Iran returned to talks.
Central Command added that one of its aircraft fired on and disabled an empty oil tanker that was trying to break the naval blockade of Iran’s ports, saying the Curacao-flagged M/T Belma was stopped after Hellfire missiles hit its smokestack.
SCMP Economy also reported that Iranian state media described explosions in cities including Bandar Abbas, Rask, and Chabahar, with additional reports citing blasts around Qeshm and Bandar Imam Khomeini and later stating fresh strikes hit Bushehr, home to Iran’s only civilian nuclear plant.
