China’s domestic leisure travel drives consumption ahead of holidays

Domestic leisure travel has surged in the first half of the year, while inbound tourism still only nears pre-pandemic levels.

China’s domestic leisure travel has surged in the first half of the year, positioning it as an increasingly important driver of consumption and growth as the calendar moves toward major holiday periods.

As summer builds toward the Mid-Autumn Festival and the golden week that follows National Day on October 1, the focus for those tracking China’s consumer confidence is shifting to domestic travelers, according to SCMP Economy.

Inbound tourism has been slower to fully recover. SCMP Economy notes that arrivals in 2024 reached 97.2 percent of the 2019 level, while tourism spending was 93.5 percent of 2019.

The outlet also highlights that domestic travel has become a key, and sometimes overlooked, contributor to overall consumer demand during extended holiday periods, including the Chinese New Year season.
