US bans foreign access to Anthropic models to protect critical infrastructure

US undersecretary Jacob Helberg said the policy was shaped by an assessment of how advanced AI could be released safely for the critical infrastructure and financial sector.

The South China Morning Post reports that US undersecretary of state for economic affairs Jacob Helberg said Washington has imposed a ban on foreign access to Anthropic models. Helberg framed the move as part of an effort to prevent cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in the United States and allied countries.

In an exclusive interview, Helberg said the administration evaluated how advanced AI models could be released in a “safe and secure” way. He added that the approach was intended to safeguard not only critical infrastructure but also the financial sector.

Helberg also said he leads Washington’s Pax Silica initiative, which includes 22 other nations plus the European Union as signatories, describing it as a platform for coordinating policy on AI security and deployment.
