US redeploys fast-response coastguard cutters to South China Sea
The six 154-foot cutters are being sent to operate out of Singapore and the Philippines, with the Coast Guard saying the mission is linked to national security requirements.
The United States has redeployed several fast-response Coast Guard cutters to the western Pacific for maritime security operations in the South China Sea, according to a report by SCMP Economy. The move follows a decision to shift half a dozen small vessels away from the Middle East to the disputed waters.
The Coast Guard said the Expeditionary Cutter Squadron is being sent to conduct exercises and cooperative maritime activities with allies and partner nations, with forces intended to integrate with US combatant commands. The service framed the deployment as part of national security requirements and efforts to advance shared security objectives across the region.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the six 154-foot fast-response cutters would operate out of Singapore and the Philippines. SCMP Economy also notes that this is the first time the cutters have been sent to the former US military base at Subic Bay on the Philippine island of Luzon.
Chinese analysts cited by SCMP Economy said the deployment is unlikely to change the overall balance of power in the South China Sea. Still, Washington’s decision is described as part of broader efforts to deter Beijing from expanding control of South China Sea features.
