HSBC Orion approved to operate in Bank of England digital securities sandbox

The first Digital Gilt Instrument transaction is expected in Q1 2027, after the UK regulator approved HSBC’s platform to issue, service, and settle digital securities in the sandbox.

The Bank of England has approved HSBC Orion to go live in the United Kingdom’s Digital Securities Sandbox, clearing the bank to support the issuance, servicing, and settlement of digital securities, according to Cointelegraph.

Cointelegraph reports that HSBC Orion will operate as a digital securities depository within the sandbox, a regulatory environment set up by the Bank of England to test new technology for securities markets. The outlet adds that HSBC will back digitally native bond issuance, including the planned UK digital sovereign bond, the Digital Gilt Instrument, and corporate bonds.

Cointelegraph says HSBC Orion is set to support the first DIGIT transaction expected in Q1 2027. HM Treasury also noted that HSBC and London Stock Exchange Group signed a memorandum of understanding to develop connectivity that supports investor access to the pilot issuance.

The Digital Securities Sandbox launched in 2024 and is run by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority, with the goal of testing distributed ledger technology in a live regulatory environment, Cointelegraph reports. HSBC said the platform has enabled more than $5 billion in digital bond issuances globally.
