China startup Moonshot AI releases Kimi K3 AI model
The 2.8 trillion-parameter model includes native vision features and is aimed at long-horizon coding and complex reasoning tasks.
Chinese startup Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 AI model, a 2.8 trillion-parameter large language model that the company says narrows China’s frontier AI gap with the United States to about “weeks.” The model was launched late last week and is described as having native vision capabilities, built for long-horizon coding, knowledge work, and complex reasoning tasks, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that third party analysis and benchmark outcomes have helped fuel concern in Silicon Valley, including a claim that the model challenges the idea that leading Chinese systems lag US counterparts by six to eight months. Ryan Fedasiuk of the American Enterprise Institute said in a report that the gap has closed to something approaching a matter of weeks.
The outlet also notes that while Kimi K3 has shown strength on some benchmarks, it is still described as significantly cheaper than US alternatives, even though it is pricier than other Chinese models. SCMP Economy highlights that the model’s results include surpassing certain US-linked systems on Arena AI’s front-end code development ranking.
