Crude swings after Trump vows revenge on Iran, recovers above $82
After sliding to just under $79.50, crude rebounded through $82.00 within two hours following Trump comments tied to Iran strikes in Jordan that killed two US soldiers.
Crude oil fell through the European session, slipping from just above $84.00 to just short of $79.50 around midday, then reversed sharply later in the day as US-Iran tensions flared again. FXStreet said the late move pushed the market through $82.00 and tested the $83.00 area before easing back to just above $82.00.
The morning decline came despite no clear market catalyst, with the backdrop described as a chain of events including nine consecutive nights of US strikes on capabilities used against Strait of Hormuz shipping and Iranian targeting of tankers off Oman by the IRGC over the weekend. The report also pointed to fighter squadrons being pulled from Europe toward the region and ground-assault chatter in both capitals.
FXStreet noted that there was also perceived noise that could be read as de escalation, including the US State Department reiterating that a diplomatic door remains open, the White House shelving a previously floated 20% transit fee on Hormuz cargo, and US backed work on reviving an Iraq to Syria pipeline. Still, traders pushed the price lower, with the article describing how previous ceasefire lulls encouraged the view that war-premium fades faster than conflict ends.
The reversal, the outlet said, required one catalyst that arrived deep in the North American afternoon: President Trump vowed revenge on Iran in a Truth Social post after Iranian strikes in Jordan killed two US soldiers. The report said that comment and the confirmation of the directive to commanders rebuilt nearly $2.00 of war premium inside two hours, helping crude recover back above $82.00 after the earlier stop run.
