Elephant Park set to open as Elephant and Castle redevelopment adds first tenant

The Elephant will debut with about 40 shops, restaurants, and bars, alongside office space and hundreds of flats as residents move in later this summer.

The Elephant Park redevelopment at London’s Elephant and Castle is preparing to welcome its first commercial tenant this month, with Blank Street Coffee set to open at The Elephant development, after years of construction following the site’s demolition work that began in 2021, the Guardian Business reports.

The project is part of a roughly £500 million redevelopment of the south London landmark, replacing the former indoor shopping centre with a modern town square surrounded by tower blocks. The plan also includes the London College of Communication, 55,000 square feet of offices, a cinema and gym, and hundreds of flats, with residents due to move in later this summer.

According to the report, the opening marks a new phase after years of wrangling involving local residents, the council, and developers dating back to the 1990s. Displaced small business owners, including a former trader who previously employed more than 30 people and catered for hundreds daily at a restaurant and deli, say promises that they could return have not materialized amid delays.

The Guardian Business says the redevelopment also follows changes to the surrounding area, including the demolition and rebuilding of the neighboring Heygate housing estate into modern towers with shops and eateries on the ground floor, alongside a newly created leafy park.
