Hamas elects Khalil al-Hayya as political bureau chief
Hamas announced that it has elected Khalil al-Hayya, its lead negotiator in indirect ceasefire talks with Israel, as the new head of its political bureau.
The group said the election follows the death of Yahya al-Sinwar, whom Israel accused of helping plan the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, and it comes as Hamas has been led by a five-member leadership council headed by Mohammed Darwish since Sinwar’s death.
According to the report, al-Hayya was born in 1960 and survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Doha last year, during which one of his sons was killed.
Hamas also said al-Hayya defeated Khaled Meshaal, a former Hamas chief and veteran leader, in the leadership contest, the SCMP Economy citing an AFP report.
