Singapore acting minister Faishal Ibrahim resigns after harassment claims

Singapore’s prime minister said no criminal action was found, and the matter was referred to police.

Singapore’s acting minister-in-charge of Muslim affairs, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, resigned from cabinet and parliament after his improper interactions with a woman became known to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, about a month after Wong learned of the conduct.

SCMP Economy reports Wong said most of the interactions happened through online messages and included meetings on the sidelines of public events. Wong also said Faishal, 58, accepted that his conduct fell short of the standards expected of a political office holder and MP, even though no criminal action was found.

The report says both parties later made harassment allegations against each other, and the case was referred to police. Observers cited by SCMP Economy said the PAP handled the fallout quickly in part to reduce the risk of leaks and to manage community expectations tied to Faishal’s role.
