Trump signs 50% tariff order covering many Canadian imports

The duties are set to begin 19 August, and energy, potash, critical minerals and fish are excluded from the targeted goods list.

Trump has signed an order imposing a 50% tariff on a wide range of goods imported from Canada, a move the administration says is retaliation for what it calls Canada’s unequal treatment of US cars, dairy and alcohol, according to BBC Business.

The duties are scheduled to take effect on 19 August and cover items ranging from consumer products like wine and hockey sticks to industrial goods including commercial cement. Several key Canadian exports will be spared, including energy, potash, critical minerals and fish.

The order comes as the US already maintains tariffs of 15% to 50% on Canadian steel, aluminum and copper, and it also levies a 35% tariff on Canadian softwood lumber plus a 25% tax on non-US parts in cars. Canada, in turn, has a 25% counter-tariff on selected imports of American steel, aluminium and vehicles, per BBC Business.

BBC Business also notes that the new tariffs are tied to previously cited trade irritants, with separate proclamations pointing to US concerns over Canada’s auto-related tax treatment under the USMCA, Canada’s dairy supply management system that can trigger tariffs above 300% for imports exceeding limits, and Canada’s provincial boycott of US alcohol that was imposed last year. The executive orders do not mention wildfire smoke drifting into the US, though the timing followed a Trump threat tied to that issue.
