US extends air strikes near Iran, targeting Hormuz transit threat
The Strait of Hormuz typically handles about one-fifth of the world oil and gas transit, and CENTCOM says the latest strikes aim to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten vessels.
Air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain and other Gulf states as the United States continued air strikes near Iran for a ninth day, with operations focused on targets around Iran, according to OilPrice. The fighting is occurring amid an ongoing struggle for control of the Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command said the latest wave of strikes was intended to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten vessels transiting the strategic waterway, which typically carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas transit. President Donald Trump said the attacks also honored US service members killed in recent days.
OilPrice reports that tensions in the Gulf rose after the announcement of the deaths of three US soldiers and the possibility of a fourth. CENTCOM also disclosed the first combat losses in the Iran war since March, stating that two service members were killed and another was missing during defensive operations in Jordan.
In its latest statement, CENTCOM said unidentified remains were found after a search at the earlier attack location in Jordan, and an examination process to verify the remains was ongoing, though the military did not specify where in Jordan the attack occurred. Identification of the victims was not provided pending notification of family members.
