China’s EV model highlights how emerging markets could build champions
The report argues China’s electrification shift lowers some traditional barriers to entry and speeds up production by making key EV components easier to source.
South China Morning Post describes China’s electric vehicle sector as being positioned at the intersection of major economic and geopolitical trends, including consumer spending, environmental policy, trade policy, and high-end manufacturing.
The outlet says governments in emerging markets have taken cues from China’s state-led approach, using incentives to generate demand while pushing firms to localize production and supply chains in hopes of nurturing domestic champions.
It adds that electrification can reduce the importance of engines and transmissions, lowering certain barriers that once favored established, wealthier automakers with deep powertrain expertise.
The piece also points to China’s large EV supply chain as another accelerant, arguing it gives aspiring carmakers a faster start by making key components easier to source.
