Chinese police researchers use AI to translate and assess dark web content
The team said traditional web crawlers had difficulty with Captcha checks and shifting anti-scraping tactics, leading them to build a system that can log in and download content for analysis.
Chinese police scientists in China have outlined how they were able to access and study dark web activity using artificial intelligence, focusing on the challenge of decoding non-English content.
According to SCMP Economy, researchers from the Criminal Investigation Police University of China published a paper in the Journal of Chinese Computer Systems describing a model trained to translate and assess Chinese-language dark web content, after prior efforts had largely centered on English material.
The report says the first step was infiltrating dark websites to collect data, but it found login requirements varied across platforms, and that traditional web crawlers struggled with Captcha verification and evolving anti-scraping tactics.
To address those obstacles, the researchers designed a system to handle multiple tasks, including logging in, making lists, and downloading images, to support subsequent analysis.
