FedEx adds delivery and pickup surcharges for some EU shipments
FedEx also reclassified zip codes for delivery and pickup area surcharges, adding 102 zip codes to a standard surcharge tier and moving 74 into pricier tiers.
FedEx is rolling out a set of less-visible fees over the next two weeks, including changes to delivery and pickup zip code area surcharges and a disbursement fee for international parcel shipments, as the carrier continues using surcharge mechanisms to increase revenue without raising base rates, according to Yahoo Finance.
Over an 18-month period, FedEx has implemented or announced more than 50 pricing changes, building on three general rate increases and including updates tied to fuel surcharges, its One Rate program, delivery area surcharge tiers, customs-related fees, dimensional pricing, and peak or demand surcharges, the outlet reported.
The report links higher fuel surcharges to increased diesel and jet fuel costs after the Iran war limited crude oil supplies. It also cites an estimate that fuel surcharges in the second quarter were two-thirds higher than the prior year, while express parcel rates per package rose 5.9% and ground parcel rates per package increased 5.2%.
FedEx also adjusted its zip code list for delivery and pickup area surcharges, shifting some zip codes into higher-cost tiers. Yahoo Finance said 102 zip codes were added to the standard delivery area surcharge tier, and 74 moved from lower to higher tiers, potentially increasing accessorial charges for some shippers.
