Shenzhen tightens subway security, bans large perfume bottles
The city also imposed a drone no-fly zone in Futian district, running until Nov. 23, and warned there is no announced end date for the new subway restrictions.
Shenzhen, in southern China, is tightening security ahead of upcoming Apec-related activity, including banning subway passengers from carrying large bottles of perfume and other restricted items. According to a notice published Sunday, riders will face scanning and carry-on X-rays to help ensure travel safety, with enforcement now described as stricter than before.
The local rules extend beyond items that have long been prohibited on the subway, the city said. Passengers are also not allowed to travel with open bottles of alcohol, cigarette lighters, or pesticides, and large perfume containers are specifically cited.
The scanning and X-ray checks are not entirely new, the SCMP reported, but they had previously been applied more flexibly, with staff sometimes allowing riders to open bags to show contents. Some travelers complained online that stronger enforcement has led to longer queues and delays to work.
Separately, Shenzhen police said last week that a no-fly zone for drones would be imposed in the city center, in the Futian district, until Nov. 23. The enhanced subway restrictions announced for Sunday did not include an end date, according to the report.
