US hard spring wheat tour highlights large yield variability in North Dakota
Scouts will visit 10 to 12 hard red spring and durum wheat fields per day, using standardized measurements to estimate bushels per acre before harvest begins.
World Grain reports that scouts expect sharp contrasts in wheat performance across North Dakota during the 2026 Hard Spring and Durum Wheat Quality Tour, even as spring conditions have generally been favorable.
The three-day tour, held this week, includes about 40 participants from across the wheat value chain, with teams of four traveling established routes and stopping at 10 to 12 fields each day to collect yield data using a standardized methodology.
At each field, participants measure heads per foot, spikelets per head, kernels per spikelet, and row spacing, then enter those observations into a formula to estimate yield potential in bushels per acre.
Along with yield projections, the tour also assesses crop uniformity, maturity, disease and insect pressure, moisture conditions, and likely harvest timing. According to the latest USDA Crop Progress report cited by World Grain, 59% of the six-state spring wheat crop was rated good-to-excellent as of July 19, and North Dakota was at 58% good-to-excellent, compared with 61% in South Dakota, 64% in Montana, and 80% in Minnesota.
