Utica National names Abel Travis chief operating officer

The COO appointment takes effect July 27, 2026, with Travis set to lead operational functions and work with leadership to pursue strategic priorities and improve service for policyholders and agents.

Utica National has named Abel Travis its chief operating officer, effective July 27, 2026. Coverager reports that Travis will oversee key operational functions and work with the executive leadership team to advance the insurer’s strategic priorities, improve performance, and enhance the experience of policyholders, agents, and employees.

Travis joins Utica National from Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company, where he served as senior vice president of affiliate operations and companies. Coverager notes that his prior executive roles include positions at AF Group, The Hanover Insurance Group, Chubb, Travelers, and The Hartford.

Utica National distributes personal and commercial insurance through more than 2,500 independent agents and employs more than 1,300 people. The insurer also operates the second-largest errors and omissions insurance business in the US, according to Coverager.

The company also recently sought to expand its branding for its commercial property and casualty business, including a trademark application related to “Core Advantage,” which Coverager previously covered in April. The article also references that a Utica National employee’s LinkedIn profile mentions the same term.
