Zhipu shares jump after completion of 1-gigawatt AI data center
The company said the new 1-gigawatt computing center will be used to train and deploy its GLM models, supporting a push to improve inference efficiency.
Shares of Chinese AI giant Z.ai, also known as Zhipu, surged 37% in Hong Kong on Tuesday to close at HK$1,219 (US$155), after the firm completed a large data center powered entirely by Chinese chips.
According to people familiar with the matter cited by SCMP Economy, Zhipu built a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI computing center that will be used to train and deploy its GLM models. The firm has positioned its GLM-5.2 as one of China’s leading large language models.
SCMP Economy also reports that the Beijing-based company completed the acquisition of Chinese infrastructure software developer XCore Sigma, spun off from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. XCore Sigma focuses on heterogeneous computing software, including compilers, runtime systems and inference engines intended to improve AI chip utilization across vendors, reduce inference costs and accelerate deployment.
The outlet said the combination of the new data center and the acquisition is aimed at addressing computing power constraints and improving AI inference efficiency for Zhipu.
